AI predicts progression of Huntington’s disease

IBM has teamed up with the CHID Foundation to present the results of an artificial intelligence model that predicts the onset and progression of Huntington’s disease. The CHID Foundation is an organization that aims to develop drugs that slow the progression of Huntington’s disease.

This technology is an extension of the early detection of diabetes conducted by IBM and the use of AI to predict malignant breast cancer within one year with 87% accuracy. Huntington’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disease in which nerve cells in a region called striatum in the center of the cerebrum disappear. At first, delicate movements such as writing letters become difficult, but as the disease progresses, symptoms such as movement disorders, cognitive decline, and emotional disorders appear.

The research team trained AI using brain scans using MRI, and measured how cognitive and motor performance changed over time using signals from the white matter. As a result, it is said that it was possible to accurately estimate the decline in function over several areas with just one MRI scan.

It is difficult to predict the progression of Huntington’s disease. Since several symptoms can be alleviated at each stage with drugs, etc., weight is placed on the prospect of how the patient will progress in the future.
