“Expanded view of AR navigation function… ”Google Map Transformation in 15 Years

Google Maps, in its 15th year in 2020, launched a large-scale app update on February 7th (local time). New designs and functions of the app are added sequentially from the 7th for each user.

The icon was renovated from a pin design famous for its map motif and adopted a four-color pin with the Google logo. In addition to expanding public transportation information such as railroads, the addition of functions is mainly about updating AR navigation functions. In addition, the menu was changed to a tab with five icons at the bottom of the screen, and two new function tabs were added. One is the save where you can see the attractions and lists saved on the map, and the other is the Posts tab, where you post reviews on the map. The remaining three are spots on the Google map screen, route search, and local trend information.

Google Maps collects user location information in the cloud and reflects it on the map. However, in this update, the functions that can be used in the transfer guide have been greatly enhanced. Transit information has already been included in many cities to check train and bus arrival times, temperature, and congestion information. Information such as temperature and accessibility in the car, and security for women-only vehicles will also be added. New features included in public transportation will be provided in March based on survey information collected from users.

Live View, an AR walking navigation function released last year, added more information in this update. Originally, it shows a big blue arrow in the direction of the destination to help you walk, but in this version, you first mark a large pin on the destination and you can see the distance from your location. For example, when you get out of the subway, you don’t have to worry about which direction your destination is. Google says that the Live View update will expand over the next few months and will test new features.
