Clearview AI, a startup that sold facial recognition AI built using 3 billion photos collected on social media or websites, has revealed the names of customers included in the list of customers provided through unauthorized access.
According to foreign media, the leaked customer list includes government agencies such as the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency ICE, the Customs and Border Protection Agency, and the federal prosecutor’s office in Southern New York from hundreds of local police stations, and major chains such as Best Buy and Wal-Mart have also tested facial recognition technology. There is a record. In addition to the United States, international criminal police agency Interpol, Saudi Arabian research institutes, and private investigative companies were also listed. The company names on the list obtained this time do not match the claims of ClearView AI so far, claiming that it only deals with North American law enforcement agencies.
In addition to the chains mentioned above, there are more than 200 companies on the list, including entertainment facilities such as Madison Square Garden and entertainment establishments in Las Vegas, and NBA and Pitney in the sports sector, and Coinbase, which trades Equinox cryptocurrencies. Among them, 46 banks and financial institutions showed interest in this field.
Since the launch of ClearView AI, 2,800 companies have already performed close to 500,000 searches with 2,228 users using facial recognition technology. For example, the Department of Homeland Security has more than 280 accounts and has conducted more than 7,500 searches, and the El Paso, Texas office has over 8,000 searches with 60 accounts. In addition, the US Secret Service and the FBI also searched 5,600-5,700 times as customers of this service.
Although ClearView AI has leaked its customer list, the company unfortunately insists that data breaches are commonplace in the 21-year-old modern society and, fortunately, mentions that the server containing the face recognition technology is not damaged. Related information can be found here .
