Amazon launches food delivery service in India

Amazon has entered the Indian online food delivery market. Amazon Food, a food delivery service, is already operating in cities in southern India, and it is said to provide a service that delivers dishes made in local restaurants and crowd kitchens to home according to user orders.

According to business consulting firm Market Research Future, the Indian food delivery market is expected to grow more than 6% per year and reach $17 billion by 2023. Zomato and Swiggy are driving the fast-growing Indian food delivery market. Jomato was founded in 2010 and has acquired Uber Eats’ India business for $180 million. In addition, Swigi, founded in 2014, has partnered with 50,000 restaurants in 50 cities and successfully raised $1 billion in financing in 2018.

However, their businesses themselves are still unprofitable and lose more than $15 million per month to acquire new customers and retain existing customers. Also, both companies were hit hard by the 2020 Corova 19 epidemic. There were reports that Sweezy was seriously affected and that 1,100 employees would be fired.

Amazon’s participation in the Indian food delivery market was reported in March. Amazon originally planned to advance in 2019, but this plan delayed the start date and time to March this year and further postponed due to the corona 19 curfew. Amazon has already invested more than $6.5 billion in its Indian business, and it is seen with the aim of providing a large service to Jomato and Sweezy in a time of confusion with Corona 19.

Amazon said that Amazon Foods is being served in parts of Bangalore, and customers can order local restaurants and crowded kitchen dishes that have passed quality hygiene certification. Amazon stressed that it adheres to the highest level of safety and that it ensures that customers stay safe while having a comfortable experience. Related information can be found here .
