Blue Origin, a space development company founded by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, will conduct the first manned space flight using its New Shepard rocket on July 20, 2021. The Bezos brothers are also expected to participate in the manned space flight, but the right to space travel with the Bezos brothers has been auctioned off for a whopping $28 million.
Bezos has previously said that he will use the wealth he has built up with Amazon to help his space travel business. He has poured his passion into space development and realization of the space travel business. Blue Origin, a space development company founded by Bezos, is independently developing the New Shepherd, which was successfully launched in 2015, and will eventually conduct the first manned space flight using this rocket on July 20.
The rights to participate in New Shepard’s first manned space flight were sold at auction on May 5, and in June, it was announced that Jeff Bezos and his brother Mark Bezos would go on a rocket trip together. The auction for the rights to participate, which changed the right to participate in New Shepherd’s first manned space flight, to the right to participate in New Shepard’s first manned space flight with the Bezos brothers, ended on June 12 and sold for $28 million. The bid price soared from $4.8 million to $28 million in just 10 minutes.
Although the identity information of the successful bidder has not yet been revealed, Blue Origin said that it is necessary to complete some administrative processing with the successful bidder, and information on the successful bidder is expected to be disclosed after the business process is completed.
The New Shepard, which will challenge Blue Origin’s first manned space flight, is a reusable rocket with a height of 18.3 m. The New Shepard will transport the six-seater crew capsule to the microgravity environment, and the manned capsule will return to the ground after about 10 minutes of space travel.
