Apple’s lost and found tracker AirTag is a report that has been verified with a bicycle to see how helpful it is in tracking when it is stolen, attracting attention.
The experiment was conducted in a coastal village with 70,000 people. It is said that it is a small area, but the test was successful. In a bicycle shop, an air tag was secured to the back of a bicycle saddle with magic tape, and a stolen bicycle tracking simulation was conducted in which a friend rides a bicycle and moves to an unknown place. Ten minutes after the ride left, so after the realistic time of being stolen, I started tracking.
First, location information was captured 8 minutes after theft. The second is 20 minutes later. It can be said that the gap reflects that there are relatively few iPhone users who go out of the city to refrain from going out for Corona 19. The location information of the person acting as a thief is updated at the moment a bicycle passes near the iPhone holder.
It doesn’t track in real time every minute, but a few times the location information is enough to guess roughly where the bike is going and what route it has chosen. It can be difficult to predict where you are going in denser populations, but you can expect to see more frequent collisions of location information.
In the experiment, the third location information was captured 26 minutes later, and the fourth was 33 minutes later. Here the bike was found to be in a residential area, and the owner who was tracking the bike met a thief on a bike.
The Air Tag body does not have GPS or SIM communication functions built-in, and it recognizes location information with Apple products, including iPhones that have passed nearby. However, it can be seen that there is considerable practicality if this degree of precision is achieved in an area with little traffic under the realistic conditions assumed for theft.
However, if it is actually stolen, the user may be in danger even if they meet the perpetrator if they trace it themselves. If the bicycle with the air tag disappears, the order is to report it to the police and ask them to search.
