Only the image sensor… Tesla Vision Announced

Tesla has announced the transition to the Tesla Vision without radar for the Model 3 and Model Y. Tesla recently mentioned a policy of eliminating dependence on front radar using only computer vision using image sensors for autopilot and FSD (Full Self-Driving) technology.

According to the announcement, Tesla will remove radar equipment from Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in the North American market from shipments in May 2021. As a result, Tesla cars may not be able to use SmartSummon, including optional FSD equipment, as the speed that can be used with Autosteer, which is part of the autopilot function, is limited to 121 km/h.

Instead of eliminating radar, Tesla uses computer vision and neural networks to provide autopilot, FSD, and some active safety features. These changes will be installed as over-the-air software updates on Model 3 and Model Y within a few weeks. So the vehicles coming out will all be active, depending on the options you choose when ordering.

Tesla said in its first quarter financial statement that it believes that a computer vision-only system is ultimately needed to realize fully autonomous driving. The AI-based software architecture will also need radar sooner than expected because of the growing reliance on cameras. The FSD team is focusing on the evolution of vision-based autonomous systems and is already almost ready to transition to Tesla Vision in the US market. it has been revealed

The reason Tesla wants to switch to an autonomous driving system consisting of only computer vision is that currently only humans can drive a car, and humans rely on their eyes to understand the surrounding environment. Tesla can get more visual information than humans.

CEO Elon Musk tweeted that computer vision is much more precise than radar, and that doubling computer vision is more appropriate than combining multiple types of sensors. In addition, they are promoting the realization of level 5 fully autonomous driving within this year, expressing the Tesla vision made of only computer vision as tremendous. However, considering the past, it may be better to put aside whether his remarks are correct.

Tesla also said that in the future, it will provide the Tesla Vision to the Model S and Model X, as well as the Model 3 and Model Y made in China. Related information can be found here.
